Director’s Statement

Storage touches on more than just the data overload we accept in our daily lives. It is about the outsourcing of memories and experiences. Our memories are no longer our own, we live on our phones and in our cloud drives and we rarely delete things. We film concerts rather than just enjoying them, catching up with friends is just and excuse to take photos of yourself, and then sit there scrolling to find just the right one. We are using our phones to create memories for us, rather than our brains. And all of this takes up space, space we are paying for. Even though we rarely look back on these things.

This is why the concept of a digital death is so confronting. Consider it for a moment... every photo, all your social media profiles, all your drives, all of your documents stored in the cloud. All deleted forever. Many would consider this on par with real death.

As storage space becomes more scarce, it becomes more valuable, and this will soon become unaffordable to those without the means. The socio-economic disparity we see in real life could soon creep into the digital world. In fact I think it already has...
